Taking a Break

Posted on:

It’s with a heavy heart that I’ve decided to put Hominids on hold for the time being. As most of you have probably noticed, my updates have been inconsistent, I’ve been less engaged, and perhaps the quality of the comic overall has gone down.
For the last two years, I’ve been trying to balance full-time freelance work with Hominids. My love and passion for this comic has kept me going, but the two things are in conflict with one another, and my need to make a living must win out.
Because of this, I haven’t been able to give the love and attention that I feel Hominids deserves. It’s not fair to the comic and it’s not fair to my readers. With that in mind, I’d rather take the break and come back to it fresh. I will still be posting work on my Patreon and social media if you want to follow what I will be up to in the coming months.
If you want to see any of my freelance work, check out my new website, where I will be posting all my projects.
https://jordankotzebue.myportfolio.com/
I don’t know when Hominids will come back, but I promise it will. I won’t let the story go unfinished.

Thanks for being true fans, Hominerds.

  1. Lee M says:

The preview looks good. Very Piniesque.

  2. Hee Fone says:

We know that pairings between Tree- Dwellers & Mountain- Dwellers are able to interbreed as in Zona’s & Icari’s case. So what other types of hominid species pairings can interbreed as well?

  3. Hee Fone says:

Hi Jordan, while waiting for Chapter 10 to begin I would like to ask a few questions relating to the Hominids Comic. The first question is that I understand the Tree- Dwellers’ culture includes copulating with anyone they know are not their blood relatives so does that means doing it with those whom they have no romantic feelings with? Pardon me if this question sounds nonsensical.

    • jordan says:

I appreciate the patience. I will get Hominids back up and running soon enough.
It’s a good question. I think overall, they are pretty free to be with who they want. However, I would wager that it’s considered selfish to have someone all to yourself, in their case. For example, Zona mentioned to Icari in Chapter 4 that others were anxious to spend some time with him and that she was being selfish. Keyli mentioned that he and Sno only wanted to be with each other dispite pressure to share. So, no rules, but definitely frowned upon.

  4. Sage says:

This is an outstanding, amazing book. I’m in love with it.

    • jordan says:

Thanks so much, Sage. I’m so glad you like it. I have to get back to working on Chapter 10. My apologies to everyone that’s been waiting. Priorities have required me to focus on other things but I’ll be back to it soon.

  5. John says:

It’s been a long time since I last left a comment here. Just want to know how you’re doing and not if the next chapter is done. Hope you’re taking care of yourself and all that.

Not trying to be weird or anything. Anyway have a good day

    • jordan says:

Hey John, Thanks for reaching out. I’ve had a multitude of projects that have slowed me down recently. However, I am close to starting new updates. There might be a few changes that happen before that but I’m not totally sure yet. As soon as I am sure though, I’ll be making a post for you guys.
Thanks for your patience. I know it’s been awhile.

  6. Hee Fone says:

Hi Jordan, so when will chapter 10 start?

    • jordan says:

Are you itching to get your Hominids back on? I’m glad and thank you for being patient. It’s taking me a little longer than usual since I have so many changes going on in my life right now. So I apologies for the delay. Right now, I’m putting the final touches on the script and then I will be doing some concept art before posting again. I’m hoping by October but I’ll have more details soon.

  7. Hee Fone says:

Well if he isn’t an alien then what is he?

  8. Hee Fone says:

Will Sno make a comeback? And this question I’m about to ask you will sound crazy but will we get a chance to have a look at the alien’s home planet?

    • jordan says:

With Sno, it’s safe to assume she didn’t survive the fall. But her death and actions in previous chapters will have a lasting effect on all the characters through out the rest of the series.
As for the second question…you’re assuming he’s alien?

  9. Frank says:

Are you aware your RSS feed is hardly ever up to date? It’s usually two or more pages behind (currently claims 269 is the latest).

    • jordan says:

Thanks for letting me know, Frank. I’m not sure why that is happening. I’ll look into it.

  10. Hee Fone says:

So will you update the characters page?

  11. David says:

are all of the face’s in the trees on purpose or am i smoking to much pot again?

  12. LaughingTarget says:

That’s one long tail or his Dad was made of rubber.

  13. Mr Heavy Steps says:

Is anyone else reminded of Kaa from the Jungle Book? “Look into my eyesss… Everything is going to be all right… Just Sssssleeeep. Sssssssleeeep.” ๐Ÿ˜›

  14. Vadik2004 says:

Great comic, but I’m kinda disappointed you didn’t draw their crotches ๐Ÿ˜‹

  15. Hee Fone says:

With the exception of the Flesh-Eaters, at least one member from each hominid species joined Icari’s team. I wonder will a Flesh-Eater join them as well.

  16. MyHatIsMadeFromOranges says:

Well, that is one way of waking up.
Probably beats the hell outta coffee.

  17. Giddgie says:

I love your artwork!!!! Longtime follower!!!!

  18. John says:

Next page is the upside down kiss, or he’s going to ask were the drugs are.

  19. T. Gatto says:

Obviously, the “creature” is mentally saying to him (in the voice of Cartmam from Southpark) “You will respect my authoritay”.

I mean, what else could it be? ๐Ÿ˜‰

  20. Rarazal says:

I kinda get a “Fellowship of the Ring”-vibe from this whole constellation, to be honest. And that’s a good thing.

  21. Samoan says:

    Great art!

Just wondering with all the interrelationships how does the tribe avoid incest and inbreeding?

Otherwise they must be riddled with genetic defects? Explains albinism?

    Thanks.

    • jordan says:

      Thanks, Samoan.
I think in the same way people in our society with multiple partners avoid incest. Keyli doesn’t sleep with Zona, Sno didn’t sleep with Clumsy, and so on. There might be some overlap but it’s not intentional. If you want an example, look as some of the behavior of some current tribes that have only recently been contacted. Overall they are pretty healthy. I think they can keep better track of who is in their family better then we think.

  22. Hee Fone says:

I understand that male Mountain-Dwellers are treated better than their female counterparts, so are they given privileges such as being allowed to have more than one spouse?

    • jordan says:

Poorer citizens only have a single wife. Soldiers and priests have multiple….or did. Given their lack of resources, having multiple wives would mean more mouths to feed so based on that necessity, monogamy is the best bet.

  23. John says:

Wow I did not expect for him to actually know some of their language! I’m on a roll!

I’m kind of sad that the backgrounds are faded out, the detail and color you put in your jungle is one of my favorite things about this comic. But for getting the page out on time I can understand the need to leave it faded out.

    • jordan says:

yeah, sorry. Some times you have to think of creative tricks. If it’s any consolation, those backgrounds were originally going to be blank anyways. This just added extra depth. Don’t worry though, plenty of backgrounds to come in the future.

    • ritika says:

I was hunting after this wonderful post and I am very happy to find this post here. OnePrint for Thanksgiving is to share this post entirely.

  24. T. Gatto says:

OK, I thought that Horn and a half, viking looking leader guy stood out in a crowd, but I must say that skull headed1 armed, riding on a rat-wolf guy really makes a visual impression.

It seems as if there is more to these little upright monkeys than meets the eye.

I am also inclined to wonderr if they were looking for the “Pale One” and that is why they kept capturing him. Perhaps the Alien/Monster gave them instructions to look for him.

    Nicely done!

    • jordan says:

I was definitely going for a “visual impression” to set the character apart from the other Root Dwellers. It’ll be fun to tell the back story of this character.

  25. Hee Fone says:

The moral of the story is don’t underestimate Gosh as he might have some hidden talents that makes him a valued team member.

  26. Jordi says:

Such a fun, beautiful comic! Loving it!!!

  27. T. Gatto says:

Now take the jawbone axe and chop his little monkey head clean off. They would never expect it.

    OK maybe not…

  28. LaughingTarget says:

Like good wine, I’m willing to wait a bit longer until it’s done right.

  29. Hee Fone says:

So why are the Root-Dwellers the only hominids to speak a different language from the rest?

    • jordan says:

They split from the common ancestor far earlier than the other species. That mixed with the fact they’re mostly isolated creatures, hiding in the roots, means this is probably the first time someone outside their tribe has figured them out.

  30. Hee Fone says:

Jordan one of the miscellaneous reasons why I admire your personal project is because it features maternal half-siblings as most of the web comics to feature them are paternal ones and I sound weird when I mention this but that’s kind of sexist as it’s similar to parents who prefer sons to daughters.

  31. Hee Fone says:

I know this question I’m about to ask sounds ridiculous but what is Eetori’s reaction if he found out that his enemy is pregnant with his hybrid grandchild?

    • jordan says:

Your guess would be right that he would be hugely upset. I feel like someone would die after he heard a revelation like that.

  32. Hee Fone says:

Well in that case, I understand that it’s too early ask you about this and I apologize for asking a few spoilers. Will Zona’s hybrid child or children as she could be carrying twins be born in the next chapter? Will Keyli and the alien be featured in the next chapter as well?

    • jordan says:

I will confirm that both will strongly be featured in the next chapter. I wont say whether the child will be born though.

  33. John says:

Interesting change in character, I did not suspect this to happen to her. Was it because deep down she did not expect it to be real and now is in question of everything. I feel that it’s motivates still need to be known before we say it’s good, but that’s the power of belief for you.

Also did Icari have a change in appearance, cause he looks ten years older?

    • jordan says:

Icari’s appearance is just based on the art being off model. Sometimes artists can be on model, sometimes not. It’s a complex relationship with our hand wanting to do what our brain tells it. Some days are better then others.
With Lye, I think she’s just more susceptible to believing. If you go back and a few chapters, you already see her hoping it’s true. In the words of Fox Mulder, she wants to believe. Seeing the creature was evidence enough for her.

  34. MyHatIsMadeFromOranges says:

    “I believe he’s alive”?
You know what, thats actually a damn interesting change of language.
Like, without icaris influence I dont think she would have said that. Even if she had a hunch, Im sure she would have said “I think”. Its like she’s opening up to the whole religious angle of things.
And keeping in mind the lack of capacity for really abstract thinking in a neanderthal brain, you would have to REALLY convince them that this is part of the real world.

Thats a lot of implication cramed into a single word.

  35. T. Gatto says:

I wonder if it even crossed their minds if they should really help the creatures who were just recently trying to kill them, or if they are so good that they just did what comes naturally and helped them without hesitation.

    I’m going for the latter.

    • jordan says:

I think an extreme event occurred and that usually brings people together, but I think their nature is probably to help them.

  36. Hee Fone says:

Hi Jordan, I understand why you suddenly return to publish the pages concerning Icari’s group but I wish to see the continuation to Zona’s story as the suspense is killing me.

  37. John says:

Wow they have boards with small wheels on it. If he had legs I bet he could do some sweet kick flips with it!

And now we know why she’s here; So who wants to bet on how many pages it takes before everything starts to go wrong. I bet five, three at least.

  38. T. Gatto says:

So any un-escorted woman gets 30 lashes, while her husband gets 5.
What if the woman is not married, or is that also a crime?

I’m guessing they have nothing remotely resembling innocent until proven guilty…

    • jordan says:

You would be correct in assuming that.

An unmarried woman would have to either escort each other or have a family member take them around. Provided they are allowed to leave at all.

  39. John says:

Wonder what he thinks he’s going to get as a reward for helping her? The way the guy’s wording it it seems like he will but for what? It’s not like she can grow his legs back….or can she!

  40. Richard Wallace says:

Hominids has definitely influenced and encouraged my storytelling. I’m nowhere near the storytelling you’ve presented in your comic, but one can dream! Excellent comic, Jordan!

  41. Hee Fone says:

The big question to her is “Is this crippled old man a friend or foe?”.

    • jordan says:

Truly. Now that’s she’s been found out, I think she doesn’t have a choice but to go along with it.

  42. LaughingTarget says:

Ok, I really don’t want to know where the butcher gets his wares after seeing this guy.

  43. Olive Dog says:

OMG I’m so Hooked on this series

  44. Lee M says:

I’d love to believe that’s just animal poop, but given the nature of pre-industrial cities…

  45. John says:

Why do i have the feeling that this is not the worst of the city.

She’s playing a dangerous game coming here for her what ever it is she’s doing.

And nice first poop. Really sells the puke inducing smell cities like these have around every corner.

  46. T. Gatto says:

Perhaps there ancestors came from the crashed space ship, and were barely able to survive until they found the mountain?

  47. T. Gatto says:

The more I see of the mountain kingdom the more I am inclined to wonder where they came from before dwelling in the mountain, and how long have they been there?

Were they always softer than the forest dwellers and, if so, how and where did they survive in the outside world?

    So many questions…

    • jordan says:

I hope to answer that at some point. The High Priest did allude to that in Chapter 6 but it’d be fun to go back and explore it. I do think their ancestors were a strong/smarter culture.

  48. Hee Fone says:

The clothes worn by female Mountain-Dwellers seem familiar, are they modeled after those of any nationality?

    • jordan says:

Sorry for the delayed replies. For some reason, I didn’t get an email notification like I usually do. They must have gone to my spam. I’ll check on that further.
Anyways, I did a unique design for the Mountain Dwellers female attire, but I idea does stem from the burka or niqab that some Islamic women must wear.

  49. Tara says:

Woo!! I am finally caught up once again! ๐Ÿ˜€ It’s bittersweet because I feel satisfied and yet insatiable at the same time. You are killing me with these cliffhangers x_x Awesome work, though, this has been an amazing chapter, probably my favorite yet!

  50. Finally, new chapter came out. I look forward to the next chapter, do not know what will happen.
    http://driving-directionsmaps.com/

  51. Hee Fone says:

Honestly speaking, if she were to go into labor on the streets, she might blow her cover.

  52. John says:

What I’ve really liked about the this page and the last one is that it is utilizing a part of story telling that few ever think about and yet it very important, “quiet time”. When after something intense or anything that causes change to a story the readers need time to processes and calm themselves. One can’t have a tale that’s non-stop reveals, action or character deaths we’d burn out. I’ve seen to many go that way and it just ruins them.

So in short thanks for putting quiet time in; it really helps make the story more enjoyable.

    • jordan says:

Thanks for noticing that, John…and saying so. You definitely need those breaks, even in comics.

  53. Lee M says:

So this is what she meant by “just a little further”…!

  54. LaughingTarget says:

Guess mountain dweller worship doesn’t include an OSHA.

  55. T. Gatto says:

A flimsy ladder to her, even in her current condition, is probably like a Golden Elevator with a courtesy bar, and a nice comfey couch to anyone else. No need for her to make a climbing proficiency check…

  56. Hee Fone says:

Smart move blending in with the citizens.

  57. rolling game says:

That’s great, the chapter stops in thrilling part.I hope that you will post the next chapter soon, I am excited.
    http://rollingskygame.com/

  58. Richard Wallace says:

    What is she up to!?!

  59. Hee Fone says:

It’s good to Zona again. I hope she takes it easy due to her condition.

  60. T. Gatto says:

That is one way to get some tail, but I think (if he wanted it that bad) his little friend was more than willing…

I agree with the theory that the “alien” is benevolent and trying to save the forest. I am wondering if it is in fact indigenous, perhaps a last survivor of an old race?

  61. John says:

I am really liking where the story is going, touching up on the mysteries that were alluded to early on! I love the creature’s look human but clearly with something more thrown in there. But I can’t help but smile when I see its tail, it has to be like 60% of its body mass.
As to what I think it’s up to; I feel it maybe trying to save the forest but nothing solid on that.
Can’t wait for the change in scenery!

    • jordan says:

I’m excited for the change of scenery too. They’ve been cooped up in the roots way too long.

  62. T. Gatto says:

So many directions this could go in. ๐Ÿ™‚

  63. John says:

Those are some nice wall jumping moves he’s got there! off to help hold the tree up.

Looking at the thing’s large tail, it looks as if he can stand with it like a lamia/ naga. Probably use his feet as extra hands then.

  64. Richard Wallace says:

Keyli for the WIN!! Awesome page, Jordan!

  65. Hee Fone says:

Something tells me that Keyli is intending to save the alien.

  66. ulm-einmal says:

โ€ฆ and suddenly there is sound again and everything seems to happen all at once โ€ฆ
I like this change from some kind of silent suspense (where everybody was just watching aghast, not really understanding what was happening) to jumping into action. Keyli looks like a spring released.
    Good page!

  67. MyHatIsMadeFromOranges says:

I would have gone for more of a exertion groan to be honest.
Which could be low enough that the rest of them dont hear it all the way up there.
So I think it works with no sound effect honestly.

  68. Jฤ™drzej says:

    They lift.
Also, a sound effect of a roar would be helpfull. Page seams mute without it.

  69. John says:

Any one else getting a spider-man home coming from this; you know the boat scene.

Any way I know the image of him jumping out at the reader from another page but somehow I can’t find it or I imaging things. really want them to have their conversation with it just so we can get some answers and more questions.

    • jordan says:

That’s funny. The Spider-Man similarity is coincidence, I promise.
Not sure what image you’re talking about having seen that before. Maybe a promo image? At my Patreon?

  70. T. Gatto says:

    Run away, run away!

Everything makes me think of Monty Python, which is not a bad thing…

  71. Hee Fone says:

So Jordan, did you model the clothes of the Tree-Dwellers & Mountain-Dwellers after any indigenous tribes?

    • jordan says:

Not really. I wanted their designs to come from their environments so the Tree Dwellers could arguably take inspiration from tribes in South America. But largely I wanted them to feel like their own thing.

  72. Hee Fone says:

So Jordan, is there any hominid equivalent to Floresiensis & Erectus in the Hominids universe?

    • jordan says:

I haven’t put them in because they’re the common ancestor to humans and Neanderthals. I might try to think of a creative way of putting them in there but I’d prefer species that roughly lived at the same time.

  73. Potwรณr says:

    Mortality confirmed

  74. Altariasong says:

Whoa, homo-squiddian threw them out of harm’s way! He really is a good man- creature- thing at heart! *crosses fingers*

  75. T. Gatto says:

So maybe the tail is functional, as well as Awesome Looking.

Whatever is about to happen, I’m guessing the word “Ouch” comes into play somehow. Too bad no one said “hold my beer”…

  76. John says:

Is Antozia’s feet different? I remember them looking more like hands; these look like normal feet.was this a change?

I should be worried but I feel that your not going kill off the creature after only four pages.

Also just noticed that the creature has an exoskeleton and the right side of his face is broken off, showing his tasty purple meat. nice bit of visual story telling there.

    • jordan says:

You caught me! I totally am going to have to go back and fix her feet. Sometimes things fall by the wayside when you’re thinking about so many things. That’s why I need you guys to keep me honest.
And good catch, that is a different texture under that exoskeleton. Could it be shedding?

  77. Hee Fone says:

I wish she didn’t die at least not before she gives birth to her hybrid child. It could be the only hope of bringing peace between Icari’s people and hers. And I’m guessing if Sno didn’t survive the fall, that alien which Icari claimed to be a god might be able to resurrect her. He might have some hi-tech equipment to do so.

    • jordan says:

Do you mean, you hope she doesn’t die? I do promise that Zona has a lot more story to be told.
As for Sno, I think that’s what Keyli is hoping too. We’ll see if that’s even possible.

  78. Hee Fone says:

When will the first page of this chapter to feature Zona appear? The last chapter featured her climbing the Mountain while she’s heavily pregnant and alone which is obviously a bad idea. By the way, when will the actual fate of Sno be revealed? In Sacrifice, she was shown to fall off the cliff with an arrow pierced into her shoulder region but she could have survived that fall.

    • jordan says:

That would be a lot of spoilers that I’m not sure I want to give away. However I will say, the second half of this chapter will heavily feature Zona and what she’s up to.
As for Sno, I think the safest assumption is that she didn’t make. I would love to hear theories on how she survived that fall though.
Thanks for reading and commenting Hee Fone.

  79. MyHatIsMadeFromOranges says:

OR its his fault, but he wants to fix it.

  80. John says:

So he’s saving them, cool. Now to find out what is killing the forest for this makes me think he’s not responsible.

And those root dwellers under that root chunk are dead, ionic. And messy.

    • jordan says:

Yeah, I’m feeling a little bad about killing a bunch of Root Dwellers. We’ll see how many survive.

  81. Vosla says:

That’s… an interesting way of communication… or testing ?

  82. Higashiwaki says:

I wonder how long the creature has been here. If the root-dwellers have been worshiping it all this time, I imagine it has been here for quite some time.

  83. T. Gatto says:

I’m trying to look at this from an extreme primitive person’s point of view.

They may never even have seen some of the color they are currently experiencing, and have no frame of reference to use to identify or describe any of this.

    Makes it even stranger. ๐Ÿ™‚

  84. Jฤ™drzej says:

Ok, but is it just me, or those tentacles looks parasitic? Like a second creature (or many of them) that live under Old One’s skin? Or that’s design choice?

  85. MyHatIsMadeFromOranges says:

I thought the alien thing was supposed to be obvious, though.
I mean, there was a crashed space ship and everything.

Or was it supposed to be an underground research facility, and these beings already live on the planet?
Does that mean the jungle is actually a sort of wildlife reserve?

    • jordan says:

I think all those ideas seem like viable options at this point. I don’t want it to fall to one particular theory just yet.

  86. TK says:

As others have said, the god’s design is SO bad ass. I can’t believe he’s finally arrived!!!

  87. TK says:

WHOA! That’s fuckin’ awesome…. look at that crazy hand tendril interface thingy! I love when I get surprises.

  88. MyHatIsMadeFromOranges says:

Wait, so is he like, comparing the two of them?
Like Kate before me said he might be the one that designed the hominidae.
Now, Im thinking since humans like we know them today, homo sapiens sapiens, only really came about around 20.000 years ago, Im assuming in an ancient world like this, they must be a pretty recent development relatively speaking.
Could it be that these aliens visit the planet every couple thousand years, and the homo sapiens is something that has developed only after the last time they were there, and he hasnt seen them before?

  89. John says:

So is this his talk to the hand or interrogation? Both?

    also gill ears

  90. Kate says:

This is getting very interesting. The creature’s crest resembles the holy symbol used by the mountain people, although theirs has one part broken off… Maybe their religion was based on a different creature who had a damaged crest? The root dwellers certainly worship it as well, at any rate. And we haven’t seen Antozia’s reaction–any reverence from her will be very telling. It (or others like it) has been around long enough to shape the cultures and religions of the various people of this world. I wonder what its goal is? Is it an interested alien scientist, merely studying a world it found? Or did it design the world that seems to be a future version of our own? To what ends?

    • jordan says:

Great questions, Kate. I like your theory’s about the symbology on its chest. I wish I could spoil it for you but imagine you’d rather wait.

  91. Otterkit says:

HOLY CRAP!!!! Inheritor species, I think you may just have met your ancestor…and Grandad is pissed.

  92. LaughingTarget says:

I’ve seen enough tentacle hentai to be scared for Keyli.

  93. T. Gatto says:

I didn’t even see Keyli until the second time I looked at the page. My eyes were glued to the (Alien?).

    Well done! ๐Ÿ™‚

  94. John says:

That is one bad-ass looking design for this character. One of the best I’ve seen. waited a long time to see him and you did not disappoint.

I feel like he saved Keyli so the he can know his people. More from a deep set of needing to know then just pure curiosity or because he cares. He may have gotten what he needs of the root dwellers and from the three human hunters that were in his (home?), but it seems that they at lest got his eye.

Is the creature bad/ evil? I don’t think so but this is his first true showing.

    • jordan says:

That definitely remains to be seen. Either way, I hope you enjoy the ride.
I’m glad you liked the design. I’ve had it in the bag for a looooooooooong time.

  95. TK says:

This splash page is AWESOME. Probably my favorite page in the whole series.

  96. Christopher Jones says:

Whoa….. :O Well, hope you like what you find, Keyli ๐Ÿ™‚

  97. Vosla says:

Guy sure looks intimidating. But that does not necessarily determine him as a bad guy. Maybe more a neutral entity who has some tough question to why the “heroes” crossed/trespassed its realm. Well, it would be at least nice for it to try some conversation before beating the crap out of everybody…

  98. John says:

And the root dwellers are worshiping him, I did not see that the first time! I can not believe I predicted that right, what!

Big smile on my face; looking foreword to more of the story.

Wish I could go to Seattle.

  99. John says:

    Ha he’s there knew it!

I am intrigued as to why he saved Keyli though, but I can think of a reason. oh well will learn later.

  100. Jฤ™drzej says:

Huh… That eldritch creature (I’ll call him Old One, ok?) really does like them. And now Keyli has proof to belive in what Icari said.

    • jordan says:

Those are cool titles you give it.
Keyli has proof. Now it’ll be interesting to see what he does with that information.

  101. Mr Heavy Steps says:

That face you make when your characters life is on the line and you roll that 1. O.o

Signs I’m WAY too caught up in these characters fates:
    1. I can’t help but make light of their life or death situation. Humor = tension release.
    2. I can’t force myself to speculate on anything past the last panel because there are too many bad outcomes and I’m more of a pessimist than I like to admit.

    • jordan says:

I’m sorry that I’m adding stress to your life, but I’m glad you’re emotionally invested.
You’re right, that I don’t want people to know what will happen to their favorite character. It adds true stakes to their lives and I believe adds more depth.

  102. T. Gatto says:

    BUTTERFINGERS!

    Quick somebody yell “Do Over”!

  103. mrw says:

Weak ground, in a tree. Weak branch, in a tree. Root dwellers mysteriously on the move. Is something killing the trees?

    • jordan says:

      Mmmmmmmm….perhaps.
I think all the people living there are definitely taken by surprise with all this. They’ve been used to a very reliable jungle.

  104. MyHatIsMadeFromOranges says:

The lower left panel made this play in my head a little bit.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJLOCAWkRoc

  105. T. Gatto says:

Forget about the inventions of Fire or the wheel, here we see the lost invention of Midget Tossing recorded for all to see. ๐Ÿ™‚

  106. John says:

It appears we are witnessing the rare Olympic sport known as Keyli hurling.

And an answer for who I think will crack the roots language; I feel it will be Gosh for I see him with the most patience.

  107. John says:

some grammar and spelling mistakes but it’s no big deal.

  108. John says:

Oh it good to see that my comments went through because I was not able to see them at at. I thought that because last week I commented using my phone and it may have locked me out using my Verizon email on the computer and I would have to use my newer gmail account. That’s a relief.

So how come no one has been able to crack the root dweller’s language? is it because they make sounds the others can’t or cause their just not friendly?

    • jordan says:

Yeah, it was a total pain but eventually I found out that the firewall cache needed to be clears. None of my comments or posts were going through either.
The Root Dwellers are probably the most separate genetically from the other Hominids so yeah, the language is harder to crack. Although, if anyone does crack it, who do you think it would be?

  109. Mike says:

Hey man, I love this comic and always look forward to the new pages. The art is amazing, the story is actually compelling, and I am always anxious to find out what is going to happen next. If you feel that it’s time to move on, that is your choice but know that I will be a sad puppy if you do. And nobody likes to make puppies sad.

  110. mrw says:

Hi Jordan, Hominids comic is easily one of my favorites. I discovered it not long ago via TWC, and have been hooked ever since. Your characters are exceedingly well done, the storyline is intense, and your artwork is topnotch. I get a hint of Alley-Oop inspiration graphically, which if true, it is a masterful homage to a previous era that you have chosen to mix with your own professional style. The concept of Hominids I find very compelling and original, and am eagerly awaiting learning more about their world and where it may lie in our timeline. The differences between the various hominid cultures is fascinating as well.

I think John may have hit the nail on the head in his comment. You probably just need to advertise a bit more. A lot of the webcomics I read I found through Hiveworks, and several others I found via guest comics in other webcomics. Link exchanges between other webcomics is another influential route. Lastly, in my limited experience, weekly webcomics always grow audiences at a slower rate than ones updating more frequently. With the incredible graphic detail you put into Hominids however, I doubt it’s possible to produce pages faster! You are doing an amazing job already.

Whatever your decision regarding Hominids, thank you for creating it. You bring a bit more joy every week, and I wish you the best whatever you do!

    • jordan says:

Thanks for the kind words mrw. I definitely need to advertise more. Once I reach $200 on Patreon, I plan to have continuous advertising going. I’d love to be a part of Hiveworks if they’d ever have me, but alas, all my attempts have failed. Oh well. I am working on a GRRL Power fan art piece that’s looking pretty cool. I’ll make sure to share it when I finish.

  111. John says:

Trying to see if this comment posts, the last one i did didn’t.

  112. Amanda says:

Greetings from Singapore! Just managed to read through the entire comic after seeing your FB page in the suggested list. Great stuff! Burnouts are unavoidable, but I’d love to see how far Zona goes in her mission too.

    • jordan says:

Thanks Amanda! I’m glad you like it. I gotta tell the Zona story for sure. I have really cool plans for her.

  113. John says:

Did my last comment get through?

  114. John says:

Ok I have to ask why was Gosh wearing sandals in the first chapter and after he loses them in the same page we never see him or any other tree dweller wear them.

    • jordan says:

It’s a good question. Gosh has always been treated with special circumstances. But if you watch him through the entire series, he silently has the most growth. At the beginning he’s pretty much completely helpless, wears sandals, is carries around, and basically has to be constantly watched. Look at his behavior now and he is becoming much more confident and independent.

  115. David says:

Hi Jordan–longtime lurker, first time commenter. There are a lot of us, I’d wager! I always look forward to your updates and I hope you can find the motivation to keep going.

I see you used to be on Webtoons and have since stopped posting there; I’ve discovered several new webcomics through them (although I came to you because you were linked on another comic I follow (I’ve forgotten which)). It seems like a useful audience-building tool.

One thing that I think might help is having a more friendly page-viewing format? I’ve found that the only way I can view the full-size page is to click on “Chapter 9” and then click on “New Page.” I’m more than willing to take this extra step for such a great comic, but I’m not sure everyone is, especially when so many comics just have the most recent page prominently and immediately displayed. So maybe that’s part of it that you could fix? Perhaps you’ve lost some readers because they don’t know how to view the full-size page, or are too lazy to consistently do it. Just a thought! But I do hope you continue the comic, it’s really enjoyable to read and to view!

    Cheers,
    David

    • jordan says:

Good point David and thanks for the suggestion. I did posit the question a few months back if I should go with a more traditional website. The few people who replied said they like it the way it is. The reason I do like it this way is you don’t get spoilers when you get to the main page. But you’re right, that might kill some people’s interest because of the extra clicks. I could always try it and see how it goes.
I also have to get back on Webtoons!

  116. prami says:

    Hi
I’m just found your comic a few days ago and like it a lot.

Not writing much but be a silent reader, hope for long time from now on.

    Greetings from Switzerland

  117. Boot says:

    Hi man,

This comic is awesome! Best thing i have read in a while. Nice drawings, great characters and a cool story. Keep up the good work

    Greetz from Belgium

    • jordan says:

Thanks for reaching out from Belguim, Boot. I love hearing from readers from other countries! Thanks for the words of encouragement. I’ll do my best.

  118. Howard says:

I found this comic on Webtoons and got hooked. I’d hate to see it end prematurely.

    • jordan says:

Thanks Howard, and thanks for letting me know where you found it. I sort of gave up on posting to Webtoons but maybe that was premature.

  119. T. Gatto says:

Having just discovered this comic a short time ago, I would be very sorry to see it go.

It is pure AWESOMESAUCE, with a side of KICKASS!

However, wherever your creative and personal ventures take you, I will wish you the best. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • jordan says:

      Thanks T
I appreciate the support. Really, I’m thinking aloud….on the computer.
Starting conversations and getting engagement really helps. Otherwise I just don’t know what my readers are thinking.

  120. John says:

All l can say is that you can’t forget about the silent majority. If you can see how much traffic your site gets and feel it’s not enough then try to addvertis more. That’s how I found this comic is through another. Try to get with hiveworks or another comic sharing site you think can help. It’s going to take a lot of work but I know you will do your best. And if after all that it’s still not enough then no one can fault you for trying. I know you can do it man just believe.

    • jordan says:

Thanks John. I think it helps to have better blog posts too in order to get conversations going and get you guys more involved. I’ve already had a much higher response based on a tough question.
      Thanks for the encouraging words.

  121. ulm-einmal says:

Every project has to come to a defined end, but it would be a pity if demotivation would let you lose your enthusiasm right in the middle of your story. You have reached a pretty high rank at TWC for example. There must be more than a few exited readers. Give us a hint what might help you to feel better.
Your style in drawing and narration is very detailed. I can understand the temptation to put as many details into your story as you can. But this creates a spiral effect of more and more details. You are in danger to lose track of your original plot.
Of course you are the creator of this awesome story and if you decide to draw it to an end it is your decision. I would prefer the alternative: take some time off, rethink the plot and tighten the story. Donโ€™t give up. Your readers are here.

    • jordan says:

Thanks Ulm-einmal. And you’re right, there are some enthused readers for sure. I think if I have better blog posts, it might help people engage better. I wasn’t even sure if people were reading them and I’m glad to know some are.
I have a very specific ending I want to get to, so I don’t think I could let that go anyways.

  122. Christopher Jones says:

If that how you feel, then you do what you feel is necessary. That said, you got something very interesting going on in this comic and you might not want to risk rushing to the end. It’d be disappointing if someone feels you gave a unsatisfactory ending for the characters.

But, you are the creator and you do what you think is right.

Also, the story arc you’re doing right now is awesome, as always ๐Ÿ™‚

    • jordan says:

Thanks Christopher and I always appreciate you, John and Laughing Targets comments. You guys are so consistent each week and I really love seeing what you guys say. I think for now, I’ll just work on having more engaging blog posts and see if that creates a growing community.

  123. David Watkins says:

As I scanned the crowd I said to myself ” OK, where’s the comic relief here, where’s the nose picker”. I was not disappointed.

  124. LaughingTarget says:

Of course it feels familiar. It’s Thursday.

  125. John says:

I’m calling it the thing their looking for is among the root dwellers ruling them.

  126. T. Gatto says:

I can see the little dudes yelling stuff like
“That’ll teach you to be Tall!”
    “Upright walking Freaks!”
“Not a single monkey in there family tree!”

    ๐Ÿ™‚

  127. MyHatIsMadeFromOranges says:

“Huh? Oh yeah, don’t worry about it. Thats just how dogs say hello.”

  128. LaughingTarget says:

    Protect your sausage links, Icari!

  129. Christopher Jones says:

    Oooooh! I can’t wait! ๐Ÿ˜€

  130. DizzyTara says:

Yesss! Caught up again ๐Ÿ˜€ This new cover art is gorgeous ๐Ÿ˜ฎ I can’t wait to find out more about this character and what happens next!!

  131. Oz says:

Just read the archive, this comic rocks!

  132. LaughingTarget says:

Left eye steals your soul, right eye gives you pink eye.

  133. John says:

I am so excited for the next chapter!

He looks angry, or it’s his face at rest?
