So concludes their discussion.

One day my wife and I were babysitting our friends daughter. Our dog had recently passed away and it was a nice comfort to have her around. She kept asking where Alfred (our dog) was. We had told her he had died but she kept asking anyways. She would say that we should go back to our house because maybe he was waiting there for us.

We couldn’t understand it. Finally she came out and said someone had told her that spirits will go into a new body after death, so that they come back. We realized that person was trying to explain reincarnation to her. It was obvious she was told this to make her feel better. She in turn, created her own mythology about how all that worked because she didn’t understand this complicated subject. She thought Alfred would inhabit another dogs body and come racing home. It was tough explaining to her that’s not how it works.

Sometimes I wish it did. I’d give anything to see my dog again…to see the people I know I’ll never see again. I cherish those moments and I wish I could have them again. That’s the rub. I cherish them because I know they are temporary. That’s why every moment counts.

I miss you buddy.
