Question:

What influence, if any, has Hominids had on you outside of just shear entertainment?

I had a conversation with a friend the other day, and we were talking about the importance of storytelling. He said that, “At the end of the day, what we do isn’t all that important. It’s not like we’re saving lives or anything.”
While I agree with that last part, I do believe certain stories have had a big influence on how I turned out. So I guess I’m curious how this one has impacted you?

Reading this comic has increased my interest in learning about other hominids of Earth’s past. I would say it’s made me think about what it means to even be human, but those thoughts have literally been on my mind since I was eight. XD

That’s awesome Nixie! I love learning about real Hominids too! I wish I could have met them.

So, 20 lashes for an un-escorted female, and 5 for her husband who allowed her to travel unescorted. Seems fair, perhaps the city dwellers are not so bad after all…;)

    • T. Gatto says:

Are there any unwed females of age, or is that also a crime?

    • jordan says:

Hmm…They probably would be all married out, but the number of females surpasses due to all the men disappearing in the jungle on their failed raids.

I disagree with your friend. Stories can absolutely save lives. They do so by offering a parable, or a hypothetical situation, in which social systems or ethical principles can be examined. The right or wrong thing to do in a given set of circumstances can be set up and the best stories will follow a sequence of logical outcomes based on those choices. In this page, you mirror one of the tamer aspects of sharia law, in which female independence is prohibited, and show how starkly it affects one of your major and most beloved characters. Other scenes show how the sudden and violent loss of a loved one (Sno) can affect you, and offers a warning against holding hatred in your heart. The culture of the tree people questions the rigorous Western taboos against any loving relationships that stray outside of strict monogamy, and shows a functional society where polyamory is normal. All of these things can change people’s perceptions through parable and indeed save lives. I can only hope to tell stories and weave metaphors with as much skill!

Thanks for the thoughtful reply, Vic. This is certainly my hope. I do want the story to be more then just pure entertainment and it sound like, at least for you, it succeeds. I super happy to hear that.
Have any of the issues brought up in the comic make you think differently about anything or did it help reenforce feelings you’ve already had?

    • Vic says:

I have tended to jive pretty closely with a lot of the things you depict in your stories, which is why I’m such a faithful Hominerd, which I’ve followed right from the start. I feel like I could fit right into your world. I even liked how the tribe was immensely skeptical of claims of a god, but willing to look and see for themselves. So your story makes me very happy! LOL

      I love that. Thanks, Vic.
